What is the proper order for the supplication of opening (Istiftah) and seeking refuge (Ta'awwudh) in Eid prayer?

Primary text

The supplication of opening (*Istiftah*) should follow the first takbeer, then the Eid takbeers, followed by seeking refuge (*Ta'awwudh*), and then recitation. This is the madhhab of Al-Shafi'i. Seeking refuge is placed before recitation because Allah commands seeking refuge when reciting the Quran.

Supporting text

A narration from Ahmad suggests the *Istiftah* occurs after the Eid takbeers, as it is followed by the *Ta'awwudh* which precedes recitation. Abu Yusuf preferred placing *Ta'awwudh* before the takbeers to avoid separating it from the *Istiftah*. However, the consensus is that performing the *Istiftah* immediately after the opening takbeer and the *Ta'awwudh* before reading is sound, and either sequence in relation to the extra takbeers is permissible.
