What is the recommended manner of conveyance when proceeding to prayer?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
It is recommended to walk and not ride when proceeding to the place of prayer. This is supported by the report that the Prophet, peace be upon him, walked and did not ride, and it is narrated that he did not ride to Eid prayer or funeral prayer. The ruling for Jumu'ah prayer is analogous. Walking is preferred because the reward is based on the steps taken. Furthermore, walking to prayer is considered as being in a state of prayer.
Supporting text
The text notes that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, went to prayer, he exited directly from his room, which opened into the Mosque, thus making riding impractical; however, the reward for steps remains the primary jurisprudential reason.
