Primary text

It is recommended to clean oneself, wear the best clothes one possesses, use perfume, and use the Siwak, similar to the recommendations for Jumu'ah, as evidenced by the Hadith mentioning these acts for Friday. Umar once acquired a garment of Istabraq (silk brocade) to use for Eid and delegations, but the Prophet, peace be upon him, rejected it, stating, "This is the clothing of those who have no share [in the Hereafter]." This indicates that adornment for these occasions was well-known. Narrations indicate the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to wear a striped garment (Burda) or a dyed garment (Hibrati) for Eid and Jumu'ah. Aisha narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "It is not incumbent upon any one of you to have two garments other than the two for his daily tasks for his Jumu'ah and his Eid."

Malik heard the scholars recommend perfume and beautification for every Eid, asserting the Imam is most deserving of this as he is the focus of attention. However, one who is observing I'tikaf (seclusion in the mosque) should preferably exit in their I'tikaf garments to retain the mark of worship and ritual observance. Taus preferred the adornment of clothes, while Atah considered it a day of humility; both views were found acceptable.
