Primary text

It is recommended for the Imam to greet the people upon exiting. Upon ascending the minbar, the Imam should greet those present, then sit until the Muezzins finish their call to prayer (Adhan). This practice was performed by Ibn al-Zubayr and Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, supported by the view of al-Awza'i and al-Shafi'i. The response to the Imam's greeting is mandatory because responding to a greeting is more confirmed than initiating one. The Imam should then sit until the Muezzins complete their call to rest.

Supporting text

Malik and Abu Hanifah hold that greeting upon ascending the minbar is not recommended, as the Imam has already greeted the people upon entering.
