What is the ruling on eating before Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayer?
Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
On the day of Eid al-Adha, one should not eat until after the prayer. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars, including Ali, Ibn Abbas, Malik, and Al-Shafi'i, and no disagreement is known concerning this. Anas narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, would not leave on the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, eating them in an odd number. Similarly, Buraydah narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, would not leave on Eid al-Fitr day until he had broken his fast, and would not eat on Eid al-Adha day until he had prayed. The rationale for Eid al-Fitr is that fasting is prohibited immediately following its obligation, so hastening the breaking of the fast demonstrates readiness to obey God and act against the usual habit. For Eid al-Adha, sacrifice is legislated, and eating from the sacrifice is recommended, so breaking the fast upon eating from the sacrifice is preferred.

For Eid al-Adha, Ahmad stated that if one intends to slaughter, they should not eat until returning, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, ate from his sacrifice. If one does not intend to slaughter, there is no issue with eating beforehand.
