Primary text

The majority of scholars hold that whoever catches one rak'ah of the Friday Prayer with the Imam has caught the prayer, and they should complete one more rak'ah, which suffices them. This view is held by Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Umar, Anas, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, Al-Hasan, 'Alqamah, Al-Aswad, 'Urwah, Al-Zuhri, Al-Nakha'i, Malik, Al-Thawri, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, and the companions of opinion (Ahl al-Ra'y). The evidence is the Hadith from Abu Hurayrah: 'Whoever catches one rak'ah of Jumu'ah has caught the prayer,' and another narration stating, 'He should add another rak'ah to it.' Furthermore, this is the saying of the aforementioned Companions with no known opposition in their time.

Supporting text

Atta, Tawus, Mujahid, and Makhul are of the opinion that whoever misses the sermon must pray four rak'ahs of Dhuhr, because the sermon is a prerequisite for Jumu'ah, and thus Jumu'ah is not valid for someone for whom the prerequisite was not met.
