Primary text

One narration from Ahmad, adopted by Al-Khallal, Al-Athram, and Al-Maymuni, states that such a person has achieved the Friday prayer and should complete two rak'ahs. This view is held by Al-Hasan, Al-Awza'i, and the Ashab al-Ra'y (People of Opinion), because the person commenced the prayer with the Imam in the first rak'ah, which is analogous to having performed the bowing and prostration with him.

Supporting text

Another narration from Ahmad, reported by Salih, Ibn Mansur, and others, dictates that such a person must restart the prayer as four rak'ahs. This is the apparent position of Al-Kharaqi, Ibn Abi Musa, the preference of Abu Bakr, and the view of Qatadah, Ayyub Al-Sakhtiyani, Yunus ibn Ubayd, Al-Shafi'i, Abu Thawr, and Ibn Al-Mundhir. The reasoning is that since the person did not attain a complete rak'ah, they have not attained the Friday prayer, similar to missing the preceding rak'ah.
