It is recommended (Mustahabb) to move closer to the Imam during the sermon. This is supported by the statement of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Whoever washes and is washed, goes early (Bakara) and is the first to go (Ibtakara), walks and does not ride, draws near to the Imam, listens, and does not engage in idle talk, for him is the reward of a complete year of fasting and standing [in prayer] for every step taken." This hadith is narrated by Abu Dawud, An-Nasa'i, At-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah. Furthermore, the Prophet commanded, "Attend the remembrance and draw near to the Imam, for a man will continually move further away until he is placed in the rear in Paradise, even if he enters it." This encourages proximity for the purpose of better hearing the sermon.
