What is the ruling on traveling before the entry of the time for Jumu'ah prayer?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
There are three narrations regarding travel before the prescribed time for Jumu'ah. The first narration prohibits travel based on the Hadith of Ibn Umar. The second narration permits travel, which is the position of Al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, and the majority of the people of knowledge, based on the saying of Umar and the principle that since Jumu'ah is not yet obligatory, travel is not forbidden, similar to traveling at night. The third position permits travel specifically for the cause of Jihad and nothing else.

The most correct position is absolute permissibility because the traveler's responsibility regarding Jumu'ah is not yet established, and the possibility of obligation in the future does not prevent him, just as it does not prevent him the day before. The time that prohibits travel, differing from the time before it, is stated by Abu Al-Khattab to be the sun's decline (Zawal). Al-Qadi did not differentiate between before and after Zawal, possibly basing his view on the time of Jumu'ah being analogous to the time of Eid.
