When should the Takbir (exaltation of God) be performed during the nights of the two Eids?
Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
It is recommended for the people to proclaim the Takbir openly on the nights of both Eids in their mosques, homes, and routes, whether traveling or residing. This is based on the apparent meaning of the verse: "...that you may complete the prescribed number [of days for fasting] and that you may magnify Allah for that [sins] He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful" (Quran 2:185), which is interpreted by some scholars as magnifying Allah upon completing the count of Ramadan. The meaning of publicizing the Takbir is raising the voice in saying it, and this is recommended because it manifests the rituals of Islam and reminds others. The Takbir on Eid al-Fitr is especially emphasized due to explicit textual evidence.
Supporting text
Dawud held that the Takbir on Eid al-Fitr is obligatory based on the apparent meaning of the verse. However, the established view holds that it is recommended (Sunnah) and not obligatory, as it is a Takbir for an Eid, thus resembling the Takbir of Eid al-Adha, and the principle of non-obligation prevails in the absence of a clear command to obligate it, especially since the verse speaks of Allah's intention for ease rather than a command.
