Is travel permissible for one upon whom Jumu'ah prayer is obligatory after its time has entered?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
Travel is impermissible for a person upon whom the Jumu'ah prayer is obligatory once the time for that prayer has commenced. This view is held by Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and Ibn al-Mundhir. The evidence is the narration from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stated: "Whoever travels from his place of residence on the Day of Jumu'ah, the angels invoke curses upon him, that he may not be accompanied in his journey nor aided in his need." This threat is not associated with a permissible act. Furthermore, since Jumu'ah has become obligatory upon him, it is not permissible for him to occupy himself with matters preventing it, such as amusement or trade.

Abu Hanifah permitted travel in this scenario. Al-Awza'i ruled that a traveler who hears the call to Jumu'ah and has prepared his mount should proceed with his journey, citing the report that Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'Jumu'ah does not prevent one from traveling.'
