Open in Qurani

Primary text

If people enter a house or courtyard on Friday, close the door, and are unable to exit, yet they hear the Takbir, the prayer is valid and they do not repeat it if the door is open and they can see the people. However, if the door is closed, they must repeat the prayer because these individuals were not with the Imam's prayer congregation (Jama'ah). This ruling is based on the understanding that if they are in a house without seeing the Imam, they are separated from the congregation, and if the lack of sight is combined with this separation, the prayer is invalid.

Supporting text

If they are in the courtyard or the street, with only the mosque door separating them, and they hear the sound of the congregation without missing sight of the people, the sight being lost does not invalidate following the Imam (Iqtida').
