Is voluntary prayer permissible before or after the Eid prayer in the place of prayer?
Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
Voluntary prayer before or after the Eid prayer is disliked for both the Imam and the congregation in the place where the Eid prayer is performed (whether the *Musalla* or the mosque). This is the established madhhab of 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas and 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, and many other early scholars. The Prophet ﷺ prayed two rak'ahs of Eid without praying anything before or after it.
Supporting text
Some scholars permit voluntary prayer after the Eid prayer in the mosque, citing the general instruction to pray two rak'ahs upon entering a mosque. Al-Shafi'i holds that it is disliked only for the Imam to prevent distraction from leading, but not for the congregation. This is refuted by the established tradition of the companions who narrated and acted upon the prohibition.
