Primary text

Building upon a grave, plastering it with gypsum (tajsis), and inscribing upon it are disliked acts. This ruling is based on the narration by Muslim in his Sahih where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the plastering of the grave, building upon it, and sitting on it. Al-Tirmidhi added the prohibition of writing upon it and authenticated the narration as Hasan Sahih. The rationale is that these actions constitute ornamentation of the worldly life, which the deceased has no need for.
