Primary text

Burial in Muslim cemeteries is preferred over burial in homes. This is because it poses less harm to the surviving heirs, resembles the dwellings of the Hereafter, and facilitates more supplication and mercy prayers for the deceased. The Companions, Successors, and subsequent generations consistently buried individuals in open lands (sahara). The basis for this preference is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) buried his companions in Al-Baqi, and his action takes precedence over the actions of others. Furthermore, it is narrated that prophets are buried where they die, which serves to protect them from frequent visitation and distinguishes them from others.

The exception for the Prophet (peace be upon him) being buried in his home alongside his two companions is explained by Aisha's report that this was done specifically to prevent his grave from being taken as a place of worship. The Companions recognized this exclusivity for the Prophet.
