Is combing the hair of the deceased woman permissible?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
Combing the hair of the deceased is disliked by Ahmad. This is supported by the narration where 'Aishah asked about applying something to the deceased's head, meaning not to comb the head with a comb. The reason for the dislike is that combing might cut or pull out the hair. Ahmad interpreted Umm 'Atiyyah's narration stating, 'We combed her,' to mean 'We braided her,' given the prohibition against combing.
Supporting text
There is a narration from Umm 'Atiyyah stating, 'We combed her into three plaits,' which is agreed upon (muttafaq 'alayh). However, Ahmad rejected the concept of combing.
