The established position held by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal is that the funeral prayer is performed over the detached limbs of the deceased. Although a potential earlier position of Abu Abdillah suggested no prayer over limbs (*Jawarih*), the settled view is that prayer is performed over the limbs.
