Primary text

The funeral prayer upon one deceased in another land is permissible through intention, requiring the imam to face the Qiblah. The prayer performed is identical to the prayer upon a present deceased. This applies whether the deceased is situated towards the Qiblah or not, and whether the distance between the cities amounts to the distance for shortening prayers (*masāfat al-qaṣr*) or not. This view is held by Al-Shafi'i. The evidence is the report that the Prophet, peace be upon him, announced the death of the Negus of Abyssinia on the day he died, and he led the Companions in prayer for him at the prayer ground, making four *takbīrāt* (saying Allahu Akbar four times). This hadith is agreed upon (Muttafaqun 'alayh). We follow the example of the Prophet unless a specific reason is established to restrict the ruling to him.

Malik and Abu Hanifah rule that it is not permissible. A narration transmitted by Ibn Abi Musa from Ahmad also aligns with their view, based on the condition that the funeral service requires the presence of the deceased, evidenced by the fact that if the deceased were in the same city but absent, the prayer would not be permissible.
