How are the hands raised during the Takbirat in the funeral prayer?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
The worshipper raises his hands during the first Takbir. Ibn Umar, Salih, Umar bin Abdul Aziz, 'Ata, Qays bin Abi Hazim, Al-Zuhri, Ishaq, Ibn al-Mundhir, Al-Awza'i, and Al-Shafi'i maintain that the hands should be raised in every Takbir. The evidence for this is the narration from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to raise his hands in every Takbir, and that Ibn Umar and Anas used to do so. Furthermore, since it is a Takbir performed while remaining stationary, it resembles the first Takbir. After raising the hands, they should be lowered upon completion of the Takbir, placing the right hand over the left, as in the rest of the prayers. A narration reports the Prophet placing his right hand over his left while praying over a funeral.
Supporting text
Malik, Al-Thawri, and Abu Hanifa hold that the hands should only be raised in the first Takbir, reasoning that each Takbir is equivalent to a Rak'ah, and hands are not raised in all Rak'ahs.
