Primary text

It is permissible to inform a man's friends and companions of his death, as long as it does not involve public circular announcements reminiscent of the Jahiliyyah practice. Scholars like Ibrahim al-Nakha'i supported this limited notification. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace be upon him, questioned the one buried at night saying, 'Why did you not let me know?' This indicates that notification to certain parties is desired.

Ibn 'Umar provided an indication of this acceptance when he was notified of the death of Rafi' ibn Khadij, and he approved the plan to delay the burial until messengers could notify those residing outside Medina, saying, 'Yes, what you have decided is good.' Furthermore, the Prophet's statement regarding the deceased Najashi, announcing his death publicly and leading the funeral prayer, serves as an established precedent for official notification when appropriate.
