Primary text

It is disliked to follow a deceased person with fire. This view is held by all those whose opinion is recorded by Ibn al-Mundhir. This dislike is supported by the narration from Ibn Umar, Abu Hurayrah, Abdullah ibn Mughaffal, Ma'qil ibn Yasar, Abu Sa'id, Aisha, and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, who advised against being followed by fire. Furthermore, Abu Musa, upon his deathbed, explicitly forbade being followed with an incense burner (*mujmir*), stating he heard this prohibition from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Abu Dawud narrated a Hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him) stating: "Do not follow the funeral procession with a voice nor with fire."

Supporting text

The prohibition specifically concerns the use of incense burners for the sake of burning incense (*bukhoor*). If burial occurs at night and light is required, using a lamp is permissible. Evidence for this allowance is found in the Hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered a grave at night and a lamp was lit for him, which Al-Tirmidhi classified as Hassan (good).
