Primary text
It is disliked for women to follow funeral processions. This opinion is supported by Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn 'Umar, Abu Umamah, 'A'ishah, Masruq, Al-Hasan, Al-Nakha'i, Al-Awza'i, and Ishaq. The evidence cited is the hadith narrated by Umm 'Atiyyah stating, "We were forbidden from following the funerals, but it was not definitively prohibited for us," which is agreed upon (Muttafaqun 'alayhi). Another narration mentions the Prophet, peace be upon him, asking women who were sitting while waiting for a funeral what kept them there. When they stated they were not washing, carrying, or lowering the body into the grave, he told them to return "as those who turn away without reward" (Mazzurat ghayr ma'jurat).
