Primary text
It is obligatory for the washer and those present to conceal anything seen on the deceased that requires concealment, such as mentioned defects. Evidence for this is based on the prophetic tradition stating that whoever conceals the private parts of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his in this world and the next. Conversely, if good signs are seen, such as a radiant face or smiling, it is recommended to display them so that people pray for the deceased and are encouraged to follow his righteous path and good conduct.
Supporting text
If the deceased was known for religious innovation (bid'ah) and religious shortcomings, it is permissible to display any apparent evil upon him so that people are warned against his path. In such a case, any signs of goodness seen upon him should be concealed lest someone be deceived into following his innovation.
