Burying two persons in one grave is not permitted except out of necessity. Ahmad stated that in cities, this is not done, but in the lands of Rome where casualties are numerous, a channel-like depression is dug with a barrier placed between them so that no body touches another. This is the position of al-Shafi'i. The necessity arises when it is generally impossible to allot a separate grave for each person, as is often the case in the land of war or the battlefield, but not typically in a city. Where necessity exists, burying two, three, or more in one grave is permissible anywhere.
