Primary text

It is recommended (Mustahabb) to prepare food to send to the family of the deceased as an aid and comfort to their hearts, as they may be preoccupied with their grief and guests to prepare food for themselves. This is based on the command given by the Messenger of Allah to 'Prepare food for the family of Ja'far, for indeed a matter has come to them that occupies them,' as narrated by Abu Dawud in his Sunan.

Supporting text

The preparation of food by the family of the deceased for the people is disliked (Makruh), as it adds further burdens upon their affliction, distracts them from their sorrow, and resembles the practice of the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah). Umar ruled that this practice, when done by the family, constituted mourning (*Niyah*). However, if there is a genuine need, such as hosting distant relatives who stay overnight, it is permissible due to necessity.
