Is it permissible for someone who missed the initial funeral prayer to perform it later?

It is permissible for one who catches up with the funeral procession but missed the initial prayer to perform the prayer upon the deceased. This action was performed by Ali, Anas, Salman ibn Rabi'ah, Abu Hamzah, and Mu'ammar ibn Sumayr.
