Primary text

Transporting the deceased from their town to another town is not permissible unless there is a sound, legitimate purpose (*gharad saheeh*). This view is held by Al-Awza'i and Ibn al-Mundhir. The justification is that keeping the deceased where they died is lighter regarding expenses and safer from alteration or desecration. This is supported by the statement of Aisha regarding the death of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr in Abyssinia, stating she would not have buried him elsewhere had she been present.

Ahmad bin Hanbal stated that he sees no objection to transporting a man who dies in his town to another city. Al-Zuhri mentioned that Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas and Sa'id bin Zayd were transported from Al-'Aqiq to Medina. Furthermore, Ibn Uyaynah related that when Ibn Umar died, he explicitly willed not to be buried where he died but in Sarf.
