The jaws must be tied shut with a wide band secured over the head to prevent the mouth from remaining open and appearing unsightly, and to prevent insects or water from entering during washing. If the eyes and mouth are not closed before cooling, they remain open. If iron (like a mirror) is unavailable to place on the abdomen to prevent bloating, wet clay is to be used instead.
