Is a martyr who is killed by their own weapon (friendly fire) treated the same as one killed by the enemy?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
If the martyr's own weapon causes their death, they are treated as one killed by the hands of the enemy. The proof is the narration where a Muslim accidentally struck himself with his sword during a raid; the Prophet (peace be upon him) declared him a brother (martyr), wrapped him in his clothes and blood, and prayed over him, confirming his status as a martyr. 'Amir ibn al-Akwa' also died from his sword recoiling on himself during an engagement at Khaybar and was not singled out from the martyrs. This is because he is a martyr of the battle, thus resembling one killed by the disbelievers.

The Qadi holds that such a person should be washed and prayed over because the death was not inflicted by the hands of the polytheists, making it similar to an injury sustained outside the combat zone.
