Must martyrs be buried in the clothes they were wearing?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
Burying the martyr in their clothes is undisputed. This is established by the statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Bury them in their clothes." Furthermore, it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah commanded that the iron and leathers be removed from the slain at Uhud, and they be buried in their garments with their blood. This practice is not strictly mandatory, but it is preferable.

Abu Hanifah maintains that nothing should be removed from the martyr based on the apparent meaning of the narration. However, the Prophet's (peace be upon him) acceptance of two garments sent by Safiyyah for the shrouding of Hamzah, one of which was used for another man, indicates that the choice ultimately rests with the guardian (*wali*). The narration requiring burial in their clothes is thus interpreted as signifying permission or desirability.
