Primary text

The obligation requires the minimum level of supplication. This is supported by the Hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded: 'When you pray over the dead, then make your supplication sincere for him' (Reported by Abu Dawud). Since the purpose is intercession for the deceased, the least form of supplication suffices.

Supporting text

It is recommended (Mustahabb) to supplicate for oneself, one's parents, and all Muslims. Ahmad stated that there is no fixed or predetermined supplication for the deceased.
