Where should a person riding an animal position themselves relative to the funeral procession?

If one rides while accompanying the funeral, the Sunnah is to remain behind the bier. Scholars hold no difference of opinion on this point, based on the Prophet's statement: 'The rider walks behind the bier, and the walker walks behind it, in front of it, to its right, and to its left, near it.' This was narrated by Abu Dawud. Al-Tirmidhi narrated something similar, stating that the rider is behind the bier, while the walker may walk where he wills relative to it.
