How is precedence determined when multiple deceased individuals belong to the same category (e.g., multiple men or multiple slaves)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
If the deceased belong to a single type, the most superior among them is placed nearest the Imam. This is derived from the Prophet's (peace be upon him) practice on the Day of Uhud of burying multiple martyrs in one grave, prioritizing those with the most Quran memorization. Superiority in the obligatory prayer line necessitates precedence here, similar to men preceding women. The basis for this precedence is the saying: "Let the wisest and most discerning among you lead me." If they are equal in merit, the oldest is placed first, then the next oldest.

If they are completely equal in merit and age, precedence is given to the one who preceded others in faith (Al-Sabiq). Al-Qadi stated that the one who preceded in faith should be placed first, even if a child, and a woman should not be placed ahead even if she preceded in faith, due to the superior status of masculinity. If they are entirely equal, the Imam may choose whomever he wishes, and if the guardians dispute this, lots are drawn.
