What is the preferred action regarding the visitation of graves by men?

There is a difference of scholarly opinion concerning the permissibility of men visiting graves. However, the established tradition from the Prophet, peace be upon him, indicates that visitation is recommended. He stated, "I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so visit them, for they remind you of death," as narrated by Muslim. Another narration by Al-Tirmidhi states, "for they remind you of the Hereafter."

Imam Ahmad preferred the visitation of graves over abandoning them, according to the report from Ali ibn Sa'id, who asked him regarding which action was better: leaving visitation or visiting.
