What is the preferred number and composition of the white shrouds (Kafan) for a man?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
The preferred practice, according to our Imam, is that a man should be shrouded in three white wrappings without a shirt (Qamis) or turban, neither increasing nor decreasing this number. This aligns with the practice of most Companions and others, and is the Madhhab of Ash-Shafi'i. The preference for white shrouds is based on the Prophet being shrouded in three white garments and the command, 'Wear your white garments, for they are purest and best, and shroud your dead in them.'
Supporting text
It is reported from Abu Hanifa that it is recommended to shroud in an Izaar (loincloth), Rida' (upper garment), and a Qamis (shirt), based on narrations that the Prophet was shrouded in his Qamis and that he clothed and shrouded Abdullah ibn Abi in his Qamis.
