Primary text

When various groups are present for a joint funeral prayer, the men stand nearest to the Imam. If women and boys are present alongside men, the woman stands nearest to the men, and the boy stands behind them, closest to the Qibla. This placement prioritizes the man over the woman, as the woman is a responsible person and thus in greater need of intercession. However, the established position from Imam Ahmad is that men stand nearest the Imam, boys stand in front of them, and women stand closest to the Qibla. This aligns with the practice in obligatory congregational prayers where men precede women.

Supporting text

There is a view recorded by Al-Kharqi that the woman is placed nearest to the men, followed by the boy closest to the Qibla, based on narrations from 'Ammar Mawla al-Harith ibn Nawfal concerning the funeral of Umm Kulthum and her son, which was affirmed by companions present. However, the sound narration regarding 'Ammar states he placed the woman behind the boy, closest to the people, which is affirmed by major hadith collectors. The initial narration suggesting otherwise is deemed unsound.
