Primary text
The closest male relatives of the deceased man have the primary right to bury him, taking precedence in performing the prayer over him. This precedence is established to seek benefit and kindness for the deceased. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, stated that a man's household attends to his burial. When the Prophet, peace be upon him, passed away, Al-Abbas, Ali, and Usama placed him in the grave. This is narrated by Abu Dawud.
