Primary text

After performing Wudu, the washing begins with the head, followed by the beard. The Sidr (lote tree leaves) is lathered and used to wash the head and beard, followed by washing the face. Then, the right arm from the shoulder to the hands, the side of the neck, the front of the chest, flanks, thigh, and shin are washed while the body is lying on its back. The same procedure is repeated for the left side. Subsequently, the body is rolled onto its right side (not overturned onto its face) to wash the back, hip, thigh, and shin. Finally, it is rolled onto its left side, and the left flank is washed similarly. This sequence is considered closer to the command to 'Begin with her right sides' and resembles the washing of the living.

Imam Ahmad stipulated that the head and beard be washed with the lather of Sidr. There is a difference of opinion regarding the use of Sidr in all three washings: some permit using a small amount that does not alter the water's purity, while others maintain that only the first washing should incorporate Sidr, followed by pure water, to ensure the water retains its purifying quality, which is nullified if the Sidr significantly changes it.
