After the washing, the washer must dry the body with a cloth to prevent wetting the shrouds. After drying, it is prescribed to perfume the shrouds (Tahneek) using incense wood (Oud) burned on a censer, after first sprinkling rosewater onto the cloth so the scent adheres. This practice is supported by the command of the Prophet, 'When you perfume the deceased, perfume them three times,' and the recommendation of Jabir, Abu Sa'eed, Ibn Umar, and Ibn Abbas to perfume their shrouds with Oud. Abu Hurayrah also stated that the deceased is perfumed. This practice is analogous to the custom of the living perfuming themselves and their clothes during washing.
