Primary text

Raising the grave (tasneem) is the preferred manner for constructing a grave. This view is held by Malik, Abu Hanifa, and Ath-Thawri. The evidence supporting this preference is derived from the narration of Sufyan At-Tammar, who reported seeing the grave of the Prophet, peace be upon him, raised (musannam). Al-Hasan reported similarly. Furthermore, leveling the grave resembles the structures of the people of this world and is closer to the distinctive marks of innovators, thus making leveling disliked (makrooh). The evidence for raising the grave is deemed sounder and more established than the evidence for leveling.

Supporting text

Leveling the grave (tastih) is preferable according to Al-Shafi'i. The basis for this view is the report that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, leveled the grave of his son Ibrahim. Additionally, Al-Qasim reported seeing the graves of the Prophet, Abu Bakr, and Umar as level.
