Primary text

There is no prescribed number for those who enter the grave; rather, the count should correspond to the condition of the deceased, his need, and what facilitates his matter easily. Ahmad stated this ruling. The Qadi suggested that the number should be odd, citing that the Prophet, peace be upon him, had three men lower him into the grave, although this may have been due to agreement or necessity. Furthermore, a report narrated by Abu Dawud mentions four people assisting with the burial of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

It is preferable that the person handling the burial (the one entering the grave) is a jurist (*faqih*) because of the need to know the proper procedures for the grave.
