Primary text
When burying multiple bodies in one grave, the most virtuous among them is placed closest to the Qibla (direction of prayer), followed by the next most virtuous, mirroring the order of precedence in the prayer line, as previously established. This is supported by the narration of Hisham ibn 'Amir, who reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed to 'dig wide and well, and bury two or three in one grave, and put the one among them who knew the most Quran forward.' This hadith is rated as Hasan Sahih by al-Tirmidhi.
