What is the ruling on loosening the joints of the deceased?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
It is recommended to gently manipulate the joints to return the limbs to their natural resting positions (arms to sides, legs to thighs, etc.). This is done to preserve the body's suppleness, making it easier for the washer to manage during the ritual washing, shrouding, and undressing. This is to be done immediately after death before rigor mortis sets in, or during the washing, provided it can be done gently and without causing breakage.
Supporting text
If softening the joints is difficult due to the deceased's rigor or other reasons, it must be omitted, as there is a fear of dislocating the limbs, which would constitute mutilation.
