Primary text
It is recommended to hasten the preparation of the deceased immediately upon confirmation of death because this is better for the deceased, prevents deterioration, and avoids making the matter difficult later. Imam Ahmad stated that honoring the deceased is to expedite their burial. This is supported by a narration in Abu Dawud where the Prophet, peace be upon him, upon sensing death in Talhah, commanded: "Inform me of it and hasten, for it is not proper for the corpse of a Muslim to remain among his family." However, it is permissible to wait for a period sufficient for a group to gather for the funeral prayer, hoping for their supplication for the deceased, provided there is no fear of decay or undue hardship upon the people. Imam Ahmad established this allowance.
