Ruling on removing external healing materials (splints) from a deceased person's fractured bone
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
If a bone was set with a foreign bone piece (splint) and the deceased is subsequently buried, the foreign material is not removed if it is pure. If the foreign material is impure (najis), it must be removed if removal can be done without causing mutilation (mithlah), because it is an impurity that can be removed without causing harm. If removal would lead to mutilation, it is not extracted and is treated as part of the internal condition, similar to how it would be if the person were alive.
Supporting text
If the splint on the deceased is such that its removal causes mutilation, it is wiped over, following the ruling for wiping over the splint of a living person. If removal does not cause mutilation, it is removed and the area underneath is washed.
