Primary text
If it is possible to perform the full ritual washing (ghusl) upon a person suffering from severe affliction, such as a skin affliction (majdur), a burn (muhtariq), or one who has drowned (ghariq), the washing must be performed. If there is fear that washing will cause the body part to separate or break apart, water must be poured over the body gently (sabban) without touching it. If there is a fear that even pouring water will cause the body part to separate, washing is abandoned, and dry ablution (tayammum) is performed instead, provided it is possible. This applies equally to a living person whom water would harm.
