Primary text

When the status of the deceased is ambiguous, confirmation must be based on the appearance of definitive signs of death. These signs include the slackening of the legs, the separation of the palms of the hands, the sinking of the nose, the stretching of the facial skin, and the hollowing of the temples.

Supporting text

If death occurs suddenly, such as from a fainting spell, fear from battle or a wild beast, or a fall from a mountain, these signs must be awaited to ensure death is definite. Al-Hasan stated that one should wait three days in the case of a sudden faint. Imam Ahmad stated that decomposition can occur within a day and a night in the summer. When pressed, he clarified that one should wait until it is known that the person is dead, agreeing to a period from morning until evening.
