Primary text

Established supplications include, as narrated from Abu Ibrahim Al-Ashhali from his father, what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our males and our females' (Hadith graded Hasan Sahih by Al-Tirmidhi). Other authentic narrations include: 'O Allah, whoever among us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, nor cause us to err after him.' Another known supplication states: 'O Allah, You are her Lord, You created her, You guided her to Islam, You seized her soul, and You know her secret and her manifest. We come to You as intercessors, so forgive him' (Reported by Abu Dawud). Furthermore, a narration from Muslim quotes the Prophet supplicating: 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, keep him safe, pardon him, honor his reception, make his entrance spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him of his sins just as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, and substitute for him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.'

Abu Al-Khattab added: 'O Allah, we come to You as intercessors for him, so intercede for us concerning him, protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire, honor his resting place, and substitute for him a home better than his home and a neighbor better than his neighbor, and do that for us and all Muslims.' Ibn Abi Musa added phrases concerning the greatness of Allah and praising Him, and asking Him to accept the intercession due to His mercy, protection from the trial of the grave, and forgiving the sins of the deceased.
