Primary text

Standing up for a funeral procession is not recommended (*mustahabb*). This ruling is supported by the action of Ali, may God be pleased with him, who stated that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up initially and then stopped doing so. Isaac explained that this indicates the Prophet, peace be upon him, initially stood up but later abandoned the practice. Imam Ahmad stated that if one stands, it is not blameworthy, and if one remains seated, there is no harm.

Supporting text

Standing up is considered recommended by Ibn Abi Musa and Al-Qadi based on the Prophet's command: 'If one of you sees a funeral procession, let him stand up when he sees it until it passes him.' However, prioritizing the last established practice of the Prophet is preferred, and it is narrated that the Prophet abandoned standing after a Jew noted his action, implying that the abandonment was deliberate.
