Primary text

When passing by or visiting graves, it is recommended to recite the supplication taught by the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, as narrated by Muslim from Buraydah. The standard recitation is: "Peace be upon you, O dwellers of the habitations, the believers and the Muslims. And verily, we, if Allah wills, shall soon join you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you." Another narration from Aisha adds: "And may Allah have mercy upon those who have passed on before us and those who will come later." Further narration suggests supplicating: "O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward, nor cause us to be afflicted after them."

Supporting text

It is considered good if one intends to say: "O Allah, forgive us and them."
